Search Engine Optimization Tips

In this third of six videos on helping you build your art website I am looking at why you should make your site secure, how to understand the role of design and presentation, basic eCommerce options and the role of mobile devices in understanding how people search and browse the web.
And here’s the link to the second video in case you missed it: https://youtu.be/IIdJ1U-s66Y
Securing your site: Basic SSL (that’s the green padlock in your browser bar or the ‘s’ of https) can be achieved with most platforms or webhosts these days with the click of a button. I always recommend using the Lets Encrypt service where it is available. Most providers offer it or something similar – make sure you use it! https://letsencrypt.org/
Other types and strengths of secure certificate are available so you should research what’s right for you. This guide will help: https://www.a2hosting.com/blog/lets-encrypt-compare-paid-ssl-solutions/
Design of the front end of your site: Having consideration over the way your site will look visually to a user is of great importance. Things like fonts, colours, spaces, layout, menus and all the other things like that will determine how your visitors feel about you. I have included a small video section describing what ‘themes’ and ‘templates’ are about plus I also mention that, should you be considering WordPress as a platform option, that Themeforest (https://themeforest.net/) is an excellent place to browse themes from different developers to see and learn more about what’s available. My them is called Enfold and you can see that here: https://kriesi.at/themes/enfold-overview/
eCommerce: subscription platforms like Squarespace and Shopify have eCommerce software/modules built in. If you decide on going down theWordpress route I would recommend WooCommerce for your eCommerce module (free to download and install) and link it to Stripe to do the payment processing. You will need both cart software and a payment processing provider to take online payments through WordPress.

https://woocommerce.com/
And you can always use PayPal too!
Finally then we talk about the role of mobile browsing and how critical it is in the design and performance of your website. We will cover more of this in a later video.
