How We Calculate Your Estimate

Our calculator uses a Seller’s Discretionary Earnings (SDE) multiple model, the same basic approach used by business brokers and M&A advisors valuing small service businesses.

We start with a baseline multiple of 2.5 times your annual SDE (your profit before your own owner salary). From there, the multiple moves up or down based on five factors that buyers weigh most heavily.

Recurring revenue. Retainers and ongoing contracts lower a buyer’s risk, so agencies with more than half their revenue on recurring terms see a higher multiple.

Revenue trend. A growing agency commands a premium. A declining one gets discounted.

Owner independence. If the business can run without you day to day, it is worth more to a buyer than one that depends entirely on your personal involvement.

Business age. An agency with five or more years of track record carries less risk than a brand new one.

Client concentration. If one client makes up more than 30 percent of your revenue, that is treated as a risk and reduces the multiple.

The final multiple is capped between 1.5x and 4.5x SDE, in line with typical outcomes for small digital agencies, and shown as a range rather than a single number, since real valuations always come with a range.

Common Questions About Web Design Agency Valuations

How much is a web design agency worth?

Most small web design and digital agencies sell for somewhere between 1.5 and 4.5 times their annual SDE (owner profit), depending on how recurring their revenue is, how dependent the business is on the owner, and how consistent their growth has been. A typical solo or small-team agency with steady retainer revenue often lands in the middle of that range.

What is SDE and why does it matter more than revenue?

Seller’s Discretionary Earnings (SDE) is your profit before your own owner salary and any one-time or personal expenses run through the business. Buyers value agencies based on SDE, not top-line revenue, because SDE reflects what the business actually generates for its owner.

What can I do to increase my agency’s value before selling?

The biggest levers are increasing the share of revenue that is recurring, reducing how dependent day to day operations are on you personally, diversifying beyond any single large client, and showing a consistent growth trend over at least the last 12 months.

Is this calculator’s estimate exact?

No. It is a directional estimate meant to give you a realistic starting range based on a standard small-agency valuation model. An accurate valuation also accounts for your specific client contracts, team structure, and market conditions. Contact us if you want a more detailed, personalized valuation.
